Page AZ weather in brief
Page sits in high desert, and its weather decides how comfortable a visit is. Summers are very hot with little shade. Winters bring frosty nights. Spring is windy and changeable. Late summer and autumn can bring heavy rain and flash floods, even though the yearly rainfall is low.
That matters most on exposed walks and in slot canyons. If a guided canyon walk is the main reason for your trip, look at Antelope Canyon tours or our own Antelope Canyon tour guide first, then match the date to the season below.

Seasons around Page and Horseshoe Bend
A planning guide by season, not a forecast. Check the weather for your exact days.
| Season | What to expect | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Windy and changeable | Overlook visits on calm days | Wind near the unprotected rim |
| Summer | Very hot, little shade | Early morning or evening visits, Lake Powell, light beams in Upper Antelope Canyon | Heat on the trail, storms and flash floods |
| Autumn | Milder conditions | Exposed walks such as the overlook trail | Heavy rain and flash floods are still possible |
| Winter | Frosty nights | Cooler walks; dress in layers | Cold starts for sunrise visits |
For most visitors, autumn is the easiest season for the overlook trail and for canyon walks. If you can only come in summer, plan outdoor time around sunrise and the evening, and keep the middle of the day for the lake or for a shaded rest.
Our pick: sunset off-road drive
In summer the evening is the cooler time for the rim, and this sunset drive includes the Horseshoe Bend admission.

Horseshoe Bend weather: heat, shade and water
The trail is short, but the desert sun is not forgiving.
Heat on the trail
The walk to the rim is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) round trip on a hard-surfaced path. Many people need about 20 minutes each way. Avoid the hottest part of the day and bring water, because there is no drinking water along the trail. The two shade shelters are on the way, and there is no shade structure at the overlook.
Wind and the rim
A railing protects the platform, but large stretches of the rim are open. Spring wind makes the edge feel less secure. Keep children and leashed pets close, and stay back from the drop of roughly 1,000 ft (305 m).
Light and opening hours
The overlook opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Do not plan to arrive at the rim before sunrise or after dark. Morning and evening are cooler and give the river its warmer colours. Details on parking and the trail are on the Horseshoe Bend overlook page.
Drones
Flying a drone in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, including Horseshoe Bend, is not allowed without written permission from the park.
Storms, flash floods and canyon cancellations
Slot canyons collect water from a wide area. Rain miles away can send a flash flood through a canyon under a clear sky. This is why Antelope Canyon is only visited with a Navajo guide, and why tours can stop at short notice.
A flash flood in August 1997 killed 11 people in a slot canyon near Page. It remains the reason operators take rain seriously. If your operator cancels because of extreme weather, a full refund is usual. Cancelling yourself because of clouds is not treated the same way, so read the terms before you book.
Summer and autumn storms can bring heavy rain, so ask your operator how it handles weather changes if your dates fall in late summer or early autumn.

Light beams in Upper Antelope Canyon
Seasonal, weather dependent and never guaranteed.
When beams appear
April to September is the main season for sunbeams, on sunny days, with the 11:20 a.m. departure as the best chance. Smaller beams are possible until the end of October. Other companies run different times.
What cloud does
Beams depend on sun and sky, so do not pay for a premium time slot expecting a beam on a specific day. Our Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon guide compares the two canyons.
On the river and the lake
Warm air does not mean warm water.
Colorado River below the dam
The river is cold. Hypothermia is a risk even on hot days, and the flow can change. Everyone in a paddled boat must wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket. Our kayak guide explains the backhaul from Lees Ferry.
Lake Powell swimming
There are no lifeguards at the lake, and swimming is at your own risk. Stay out of foamy or algae-covered water, since water quality can change after heavy rain or with the lake level. Swimming is not allowed in marinas and launch areas. See Lake Powell for beaches and ramps.
Plan the rest of the day
On the lake, wind and waves matter for paddlers and small boats. For a base in Page, Wahweap or Marble Canyon, see where to stay in Page.

Page AZ weather: frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Horseshoe Bend?
Autumn gives the mildest conditions for the exposed overlook trail. In summer, go at sunrise or in the evening. Spring can be windy, and winter mornings are cold. The best month also depends on what else you plan, such as light beams, swimming or kayaking.
How hot does it get in Page?
Summers are very hot with little shade. Bring water, wear a hat and avoid the middle of the day on the trail. There is no drinking water along the way, and there is no shade structure at the rim.
Can Antelope Canyon flood?
Yes. Slot canyons can flood from rain that falls far away. Tours run only with a Navajo guide, and operators can cancel when the weather is extreme. Follow the guide's instructions at all times.
When are the light beams in Upper Antelope Canyon?
Beams are most likely from April to September on sunny days, with the 11:20 a.m. departure as the best chance and smaller beams possible until the end of October. They are never guaranteed.
Is the Page weather forecast reliable for a canyon tour?
A forecast gives a general idea, but slot canyon conditions depend on rain upstream. Check the weather again on the morning of your tour and confirm with your operator.
Is this the official website for Horseshoe Bend?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not the website of the National Park Service, the City of Page or the Navajo Nation, and it is not connected to any tour operator or hotel.
